Our History
The Philippine Society for Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery (PSURPS) is a non- profit organization founded by a group of distinguished gynecologists with specialized skills in managing diverse pelvic floor disorders.
These disorders, stemming from pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, surgery, or malignancy and its treatments, encompass a spectrum that include, but are not limited to, pelvic organ prolapse, urinary or fecal incontinence, benign genitourinary neoplasms, urogenital tract injuries, and more.
In 2005, the Philippines had five formally trained urogynecologists, each honing their skills in different corners of the globe – Lennette C. Chan, Maria Teresa C. Luna, Manuel S. Ocampo Jr, Lisa T. Prodigalidad-Jabson, and Judith M. Sison. These individuals met for acquaintance, but were all cognizant of the need for a formal group for future urogynecology collaborations.
It was in 2007, at the behest of Dr. Ma. Corazon Zaida N. Gamilla, the incoming president of the Philippine Society of Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (POGS) and Dr. Walfrido S. Sumpaico, Secretary-General of the Asia-Oceania Federation in Obstetrics and Gynecology (AOFOG), that the group was summoned to lead a joint project with the International Urogynecological Association (IUGA).
In October 2007, PSURPS officially was officially formed, with Dr. Lisa Prodigalidad-Jabson at the helm as the Founding President. The inaugural bord members were joined by Dr. Almira Amin Ong and Dr. Jennifer Marie B. José as the seven founding members.
In 2008, PSURPS hosted the IUGA eXchange Manila at the University of Sto. Tomas (UST). This comprehensive event included didactic lectures, hands-on activities, including an Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injuries (OASIS) workshop, with six international IUGA faculty members in attendance, including then IUGA President Professor Charles Su.
Following the success of this program, PSURPS gained official recognition as registered societies by local entities (POGS, PMA) and international societies
Simultaneously, the Philippine Board for Urogynecology and Reconstructive Surgery (PBURPS) was established, ensuring the highest standards in urogynecology training and education, with Dr. Judith M. Sison serving as its first chair.
Over the years, PSURPS has remained committed to its mission. Activities such as the 2010 2nd IUGA eXchange program, ongoing regional medical education initiatives, and annual OASIS workshops, including pre-congress activities at the POGS conventions since 2014 have solidified its presence.
Even amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, PSURPS adapted by showcasing regular webinars and virtual OASIS workshops.
Today, PSURPS has 20 active members, including five members outside the National Capital Region, highlighting its growth and diversity.
PSURPS has firmly placed the Philippines on the Urogynecology map, making noteworthy contributions regionally and internationally. As it continues to evolve, PSURPS remains unwavering in its dedication to enhancing the quality of life and female pelvic health through education, training, and the delivery of quality healthcare.
